Card was stolen and then American Express cancelled the card
ELYRIA, OHIO -- I had just paid off every credit card and used my American Express card to buy $35 of gas at a station, went to buy another item and it was declined. Someone had placed a $900 charge on my acount. I called American Express which were less than useful and so they did say they would replace my card. Then I got a letter saying they were cancelling my account. There customer service department needs to go back to wherever they come from and they need someone who actually knows how to treat customers. I had been with American Express for about 30 years but have demanded they NEVER contact me again. I am done with their antics. Interesting note from BBB:

On October 1, it was announced that American Express will refund $85 million to customers to settle regulators' accusations that it charged unlawful late fees and deceived customers to pressure them to pay off old debts or buy extra credit card services. Besides the refund to about 250,000 customers, AMEX will pay civil penalties totaling $27.5 million to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
