Don't buy carpet from Lowes

Complaint

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY -- My wife and I had purchased carpet from Lowes and the rug is literally falling apart and I can feel the Staples underneath my feet. The installer had a truck with no name and brought his SON to help. Very unprofessional. Of course I call Lowes to help out and they can't seem to find my order in their system. How convenient. Never get carpet from a company that can't afford to get their own installers with their own trucks.

Using Lowes or Home Depot to install something, you are going to get a a third party contractor. This kind of operation often does not have trucks with signage on them.

When I was young, I helped my brother, who in turn was helping a friend who had a hardwood installation business. Spent a day hammering in hardwood.

There are several tasks in carpet installation that do not require a lot of expertise, unlike creating a seam which does.

Personally, I used HD once to install carpet, and the results were as expected - budget. Not great, not poor.

I purchased carpet from Lowes in 2010 and was quite pleased! They contracted out my installation as well but I was happy with the job when all was said and done. They didn't even take a lunch break and were completely finished by 3pm. They get their supplies directly from Lowes so the carpet was the one you chose. If it is falling apart already, I'd make sure they heard about it. They may offer a remedy.

One should be aware that not all carpet is created equally. More cheaply produced carpet, with a less denser mat, will do just as you're describing especially in higher traffic areas. You aren't specific about the age of the carpet, so it's difficult to ascertain if it may even be reasonable.

I bought carpet from Lowes (Palm Springs, CA) in 2010 and they sent a private installer (a guy, Carlos, I think, and his 14 yr old "trainee" son) to do the install. Most beautiful and professional carpet install I ever saw - so carefully done, attention to every detail...took at least an hour cleaning and vacuuming. It was from Lowes and far as I'm concerned it doesn't get better. I think its just the luck of the draw. Good idea to have wife shoot leg at salesmen when he is processing the order. Couldn't hurt.
