MENLO PARK, NEW JERSEY -- My wife surprised me with this beautiful North Face Down jacket for our 18th wedding anniversary present. She purchased it at Nordstrom in Short Hills Mall NJ. I was so happy. I tried it on, fits perfect. I took all the tags off and threw out my gift receipt thinking nothing of it not thinking that this jacket is defective. I was so excited to wear my new jacket, I wore it to my company Christmas party. I took my jacket off and my wife noticed big clump of feathers all over my black sweater in my hair and on my pants. The next day I returned it to Menlo Park Mall in NJ, closer to my house. Sales associate asked for my receipt, I told her that I thew out my receipt and didn't have my tags for it. Sale associate told me that after inspecting the jacket, she can't take the jacket of exchange because I didn't have my receipt. also she replied that she sold North Face jacket for the last 4 years, never saw a North Face jacket have feather pulling out like this jacket that this jacket might be a "counterfeit" I guess Nordstrom selling counterfeit North Face jacket? Who really keeps their receipt after trying on a jacket and all the tags after 4 days? Paid $245 for this jacket now I'm stuck with a defect jacket. SOOO [snip] OFFF!!!!

I believe "Nordies" has one of the best polices out there when it comes to returns and exchanges. That said, keeping a receipt until you know an item is satifactory is always a good idea. The first issue that arises is, do you have some form of proof of payment? Check, debit, credit? If it was a cash purchase, my guess is you *may* be out of luck. After all, and I'm not suggesting you did this - what if someone is trying to scam the store by claiming they bought it there when they didn't?

What seems like the best choice is to bring it to the store where it was purchased. There should be others identical to it on the rack (including code numbers on labels). They may exchange it. I would doubt Nordstroms is selling counterfeit goods, but there may be a chance. Did you look at the store in Menlo Park to see if they had the same model?

If I paid $245 for a coat i sure as heck would keep the tags and receipt until I knew that it was going to last. I prefer buying my outerwear at Burlington Coat Factory where you can often find great deals myself.

Even the best of manufacturer's at times have defective products make it through their process. That being so, it is always important to keep the receipts, especially for more expensive items. When I buy something, I throw the receipt in a draw where I keep receipts. Then, if there is ever any problem I have the receipt to return it.

I agree have them key in the numbers on the sewn in label. That should tell them if it was in their inventory.

I have to agree with most the other comments posted. A purchase of this amount suggest one keeps the needed receipts.

You might try contacting the individual location you bought it through.

Best of luck.

It's possible that a "customer" bought a real North Face jacket and then returned an identical but fake jacket. I have heard of fake designer jeans being returned to Nordstrom because their staff was not properly trained on how to authenticate them. If the store you bought the jacket from refuses to let you return the jacket, contact The North Face directly, they can help you authenticate the jacket. If you've close to a TNF store, they should be able to help you as well.

Nordstrom has the most liberal return policy ever but you should have at least tags OR receipt. It is an expensive purchase and you were happy with it with exception of the defect. You should have your jacket. Go to the store and purchase an identical jacket - inspect it carefully. You will then be in possession of a receipt. Use the receipt to make a return.

My suggestion would be to 1) take it back to the store you purchsed it at
