Customer Care - Complaint

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS -- I wrote a check that was approved at the check-out, they all are. The receipt has an approval number on it. I Got a letter 12/22/12 from a collection company that said my check was dishonored, meaning the account number could not be read by machine. Nobody bothered to read it manually or call for the account number or credit card.

I have had this problem before if the check is folded on the account number. It is still legible, but machine or cash register will not "see" it. Trs threatened to blacklist me with telecheck if I didn't pay with a $32.48 surcharge.

I E-mailed customer care to complain, they just said to
talk to tele-check.

I buy a lot from Home Depot, but will switch to Lowe's.
They call about everything else - don't know why someone couldn't call about a check someone messed up.

I would think if there was a problem with the machine reading it, then there would have been a problem reading it at the check out...but you got the approval at the register! I agree, they should have tried to contact you for another check or another form of payment before turning it over to a collection agency.

Have you, in fact, contacted Tele-check to confirm what the issue is? It sounds to me like you're making the assumption that the number could not be read but this, by no means, makes it so.

My concern is that you've had some problems before with your account and checks. It may be worth clearing this up before it happens yet again.

You should contact the management of the store and offer to replace the check. If they balk, offer to replace the check minus the cost of the stop payment for the first check. If the check was intact when you used it, you don't owe them any kind of service charge, your obligation is for the amount of the check itself. You will always do better if you talk to the manager of the store in person. Emails are a waste of time.

Like M. S. Basher, I'm shocked that the check was processed satisfactorily at the register, but the account number later was not readable.

I'm further perplexed that a check that was folded was the cause, because they should kick out such checks and a have a human being look at them. It would have to be really messed up to be not legible.

I'm wondering if once this check went on its way to be processed, this was out of HD's hands.

8er, 8er, my 8er...I was kinda thinking the same thing. The check may have been just fine at check out...but by the time it was sent to the bank for cashing/deposit, it may have gotten damaged or the bank's computers were unable to scan to complete the transaction. The OP should question what happened with the check after it left his/her hands.

Agree that it sounds as if something happened to the the check once it left the OP's hands. If it went through at the checkout then there was nothing wrong with the check as it was read. I would also contact the bank and ask why it was dishonored. They would also be able to tell you what was wrong with the check.
The surcharge sounds like an odd amount. Has the OP checked to make sure this is not some type of a scam?

It is not uncommon that the MICR line on the check can get damaged. It may have been fine at the cash register, but when the check is converted to an image at the processing center, the account number cannot be read. Even visually. Sometimes the bank it is drawn on will provide the missing number(s), but usually not.
The bank it is drawn on won't know anything about it, since they never received it back.
What should have happened is that they should have contacted the OP and asked either for the correct account number, or a new check. They certainly shouldn't be giving her a hard time.
