SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Do Not Buy this Water Heater unless you want to replace the Anode every two months. Whirlpool will not honor the the warranty for this, we have replace the anode with a BETTER one less than a month ago and the water is smelling again. First replacement after less than 2 months for the anode and have a plumber replace it $150.00....less than a month later the water is starting to smell again. Cannot afford to replace it each month, will be getting a different water heater and will have to just absorb the cost since they will not honor the warranty.

I like Whirlpool appliances overall. What you are referring to as a Whirlpool water heater, though, is actually a water heater produced by American Water Heaters with a purchased 'Whirlpool' brand upon the product. For reference, you can reach American Water Heaters at (877) 817-6750.

With respect, the anode rod is absolutely covered within the warranty guidelines of the water heater. However, it is not covered in the same way the entire tank is covered, from rust or corrosion. It's also important that you contact someone who is authorized to do warranty repair work on Whirlpool water heaters, as they are separate from the rest of the Whirlpool family. Just because someone is authorized Whirlpool does not mean their authorized Whirlpool water heaters.

It should be important to recognize that you are also in a high mineral (hard water) area, being in Salt Lake. This shouldn't create a problem within just a two month period from the time you've had the original anode rod replaced.

I'd contact the person or company you had do this initial service as they may not have done it correctly and warranty their work. I'd also contact the place you purchased the water heater. Many retailers offer very inexpensive extended warranty programs that guarantees coverage in such an issue. If you did pay a little more when making the purchase and then forgotten, they may be able to reference the purchase and cover the repair(s).

Best of luck and let us know what happens.

What makes the water smell?

@ Obsfucation: It's probably the odor ;-)

Interesting. At my cottage we deliberately removed the anode rod to prevent sulphates from turning to elemental sulphur - and, as a result, the water has no odor or discoloration either from sulphur or iron. Wonder what elements are in your water. Maybe you oughta just remove the anode rod altogether and see what happens. It worked for us.

We have stinky water--thank you Whirlpool!!! Have leaved here nearly 40 yrs and have had 2 water heaters previous to buying the Whirlpool. No odor until installing the Whirlpool in August 2012. Am taking it out and hauling it to be recyled. Will never purchase another Whirlpool product AGAIN! Shame on you for producing junk!
