COON RAPIDS, MINNESOTA -- I just spent $300 at Target, spend thousands of $'s there a year. However, my bill is 3 days late (only late b/c I paid the bill online through the bank and it hasn't posted to Target yet b/c of the holidays & being the weekend I'm assuming. I pay on time every single month) and they won't give me the 5% Redcard discount. HORRIBLE customer service and RIDICULOUS policies! I would not have spent that much money or went to Walmart if I knew in advance I wasn't going to get the discount. I called customer service and they said their policy is that if a bill is 3 days past due they reject the card and they can't give me the discount. Target just lost a great customer, I'm shopping at Walmart from now on. They are cheaper anyways!

I'm a very big proponent to consumer rights but, with respect, those discounts are offered in a partial effort to get you to pay the charges on time. It's unfortunate that your account went past due, however, even under your assumptions, Target isn't responsible for your inability to have the payment in on time.

Were you charged late fees or interest?

If that is their policy outlined in their terms of service, then that is their policy. When I pay bills online through the bank (and I do for about 99% of my bills) and there is a holiday that could affect how it gets posted (my car insurance is notorious for this), I always make sure to send it out a few days ahead of the due date so the receiver has time to post it.

The thing about promotions and discounts connected with credit and debit card purchases is...

they are often reserved for customers who pay their bills on time. For your consideration, think about 0% interest loans. The interest accrues behind the scenes, and the minute the card holder fails to pay a due balance on time, they get hit with that accrued interest. There's nothing wrong with this IMO - these are terms advertised when the agreement is made.

The fact that holidays, etc caused you to pay your bill late is not the fault of the bank or Target. This is something the consumer is responsible for anticipating. I'd chalk this up to a lesson learned.
