Outback Steakhouse - Henderson - Hair in Salad

Complaint

TAMPA, FLORIDA -- Tampa (Henderson Street). Dec. 27 found hair in salad, and Manager saw it and comped $9.99 of $78 total bill. When my family was not with me I called and told him I was surprised he did not comp entire bill. I could of loudly complained as the restaurant was at full capacity, but opted to keep it low-key. He credited another $21 to my Visa but I feel the entire $78 should have been comped. Also, my guests were hesitant eating their own salads, and the one that ordered a Cobb Salad didn't even finish half of it as she lost her appetite! While Manager said this compensation was standard in the industry, I immediately found examples online where other Outback Managers comped the entire meals for hair in a sandwich and also a salad -- and their total bills exceeded $100. Comments or Feedback -- is this acceptable?

$31 - per hair - per salad seems to be a fair compensation; but here's the deal... the manager has probably lost a customer for an insignificant amount of $$$. I had a very bad steak at Longhorn not too long ago and was forced to send it back to the kitchen, the replacement was a horrendous mass of gristle. I took a photo of the mess and sent it to the entire executive staff at Darden (The parent company for Longhorn) and I got a personal phone call from the VP and a $100 gift card. I used the card to take my family back to Longhorn Steakhouse and had a wonderful experience the second time around. I have since gone back at least a dozen times. Morale of the story -- a customer will go where they feel wanted, and Outback doesn't seem to be this kind of place. Try Longhorn TTC

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. They comped the salad in question, and that was the right thing to do. But unless there was hair in more than one meal, the rest of the bill should have stood as is.

As for the examples you found, what were the circumstances? Was it just a hair in a sandwich or were there other factors involved (eg, poor service to begin with)?

Interestingly worded complaint. Were there other items ordered and consumed that were not salads?

If you ate the entire meal (and it sounds like all but one of you did), then why should you be comped the entire bill? Yes finding a hair in ONE salad is unacceptable but obviously it didn't ruin the entire meal if you were still able to do it. Management uses their own discretion when handling these situations. Just because a patron at another restaurant had their entire meal comped, doesn't mean you will be given the same treatment. Also, if the managers resolution wasn't good enough, the time to resolve it to your satisfaction was then and there. Not after the fact.
