FYI, this is standard policy for all airlines. As far as your trip insurance, what does the print say? Missed flights aren't always covered.

Almost all airlines will cancel the rest of your flights if you miss one. This is not exclusive to Spirit.

Travel insurance only covers things spelled out in the policy, like a medical issue, a death in the family, etc...

This is SOP with airlines today - if you miss the outbound, they cancel the return.

Travel insurance has nothing to do with missing your departure flight. Most, if not all, airlines will cancel the return flight if you miss the departure. They assume since you didn't fly out, you don't need to fly back and they will then sell that seat to someone else.
