Applebees - Employee(s) Not So Honest

Complaint

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA -- It seems that some of the people Applebees has on their payroll are not honest. In fact they appear to be thieves. I too was a victim of an attempt to increase the amount of the stated tip. I found out about the theft after reviewing my credit card statement. The charge for the food service was greater on my statement than the charge listed on my receipt.

I contacted the restaurant manager and faxed a copy of my receipt to him along with my credit card report. I got a return telephone call later in the day indicating that they were looking into the complaint. I asked him if they had examined the restaurant's copy of the receipt for alterations and he responded that "they had not located it as yet".

I got my money back, but how many times does this happen? Chances are that they get away with the theft many more times than they are caught and then the few times they are caught, its "so sorry, we have dealt with it." Maybe they should include a notice on their menu that state "We will assign a tip to the bill that we feel is appropriate". Don't eat at Applebees!!

Assuming this is a case where they ran your card, then handed you a receipt for you to add the tip, the fault lies with the employee who enters the final amount. Not Applebees. Therefore I do not agree with your last sentence, at least not as a conclusion. I will never eat at Applebees again, but it has to do with their food, not credit billing.

Rogue employees can be found in many places. I'm glad you got your money back.

You might also report this to your CC company. If they can see a pattern of this, they will be all over that restaurant's case. It was happening at a local restaurant here, and they actually closed the place down.

This location in ALbermarle is owned by AppleGold. Here is their website:

You can report the incident to them directly. By the way, just wanted to kind of piggyback what someone else said: this isn't an Applebees thing. This type incident can happen anywhere. And, I too do not eat at Applebees but that is only because the couple dishes I liked have been removed from the menu.

I have to respond to something the OP said. They think the restaurant should print a notice that they will add an appropriate tip. I am dead set against forced tips. I am quite generous in tipping if I have received excellent service. On the other hand, I once left a penny, and the waitress demanded to know if I considered that a tio, I told her, "No, it's a suggestion." Tips should be based on the service rendered, not to serve as a form of strong arm robbery by the restaurant.

I really appreciate the heads up. Something everyone should keep in mind.
