Ridiculous Sears Flooring Estimate

Complaint

EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO -- After purchasing a new home that was constructed in the 1950's, I contacted Sears for an estimate on flooring. All the old carpeting was removed as well as the cork flooring completely cleaned. The only thing left was to install the carpeting and laminate flooring. The Project Team was late but very curtious. I specifically explained that the cork flooring would not be removed and the exact square footage of the entire 1st floor. The Project Team Lead continually explained that he always got the estimates exactly right, Wrong! I was quoted for removal of cork floor (specifically told them not to remove), square footage guesstimate was so far off (additional 900 sq ft then required)and when asked for a breakdown of costs, they seemed aggravated and told me it was all inclusive (would not provide). The price was astonishing (almost $20,000)for the WRONG guesstimate at square footage (2400)and the price was not adjusted when the correct square footage was identified (1500). I feel sorry for the older individuals that get raped daily by these ridiculous estimates. This was the 1st time I requested a services, Sears will never provide me a service; EVER!!! The cost of materials purchased elsewhere cost a little over $5000 and that included Professional carpet installation. How can you provide a quoted price for 2400 square feet and the quote not change after the square footage was changed to 1500?

Sears like many big box companies mainly use subcontractors to do their installations and remodeling. That usually means that you will pay more because Sears will make money and the installer will make money on the work done. Installers always add extra footage to compensate for waste. The extra footage should only be used for cost of product and not cost of install but they will definitely try to slip that by the consumer. Like you did you should always have a fairly good idea of the space they are estimating. There are several good places for you to get this work done in your hometown and eliminate Sears from your plans. May I suggest Roe Carpeting located in downtown ELO. He has been there for years and he is honest and reliable. Drive careful in that snow you just got. Good luck

Sorry to hear of your problems. but i know full well how rotten sears service is, we've had trouble with furnace, windows, and maintenance agreements. etc. Their work is substandard and we had them out to fix a gas range that is covered under maintenace agreement or was until we got disgusted. They were out 10 different times on the problem with burners not lighting. If oven is on forget about lighting burner unless you use lighter or match. After 10 times they never did fix the problem. So i'm just waiting for the thing to go all the way and go to home depot, hhgregg etc. to get new gas range. In our maintenance agreement they said if they had to come out on the same problem more than 3 times they would replace range or give credit. Never happened. Because repair guy said no and forget about getting in touch with store managers they hide in their office. I found out the hard way find privately owned businesses and contractors to do installs. You will be happier and save money. I've been contacted by sears social media and get the brush off with my problem. Not worth the time. When you deal with them. by the time they help your house could fall down.
