NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Purchased a $4200 setting and a $18,000 diamond from Diamonds International in St. Martin back in April 2011. Diamond actually fell out of the setting on Thanksgiving Day 2012. My local jeweler did not want to reset the diamond back in the actual band. My Jeweler offered me $65.00 for a band that we paid $4200.00 for. I contacted the New York office and they have done nothing for me. They do not stand behind their jewelery which is over priced and worthless. DO NOT BY ANY JEWLERY FROM THEM. Please spread the word on that they do not stand behind what they sell. I am going to take legal action against them.

The price offered for the band by your local jeweler does not suprise me. The amount of actual gold by weight in a wedding band is minimal at best and the offer was likely based on the weight.

How a stone is set and cared for is paramount in whether it remains in the setting or falls out. Most are set with "prongs" wrapped around the stone. As a diamond is a very hard substance and the setting softer, it is not uncommon for dirt or another foreign object to get between the actual setting and the stone. Over time as the ring is moved about when worn it will wear away the metal of the prong loosening the stone.

It is vitally important that with any precious stone set in a ring that you have the piece professionally cleaned on a regular basis and the settings checked to ensure the stone is still firmly in place.

Was the band mistreated? As noted above, diamonds do often loosen in settings. It surprises me that the setting would go completely bad. It also surprises me that a band that cost $4000+ has a scrap value of $65.

It is perfectly reasonable to expect the company to do something for you after only having this 1-1/2 years. What basis do you feel you have for legal action?

The scrap price did not suprise me. The average wedding band contains just less than 5 grams of gold - current scrap price would be around $199 for an honest jeweler and many will try to undercut the price to make a profit on the gold.

The 4K price did not suprise me as often you are paying for unique designs for the band or setting.
I did sell jewelry for a time and can speak to the average markup over wholesale for most jewelers normally being 1000% or greater
