I believe the medical coverage that auto insurance includes is BASIC, and it isn't meant to be a substitute for medical insurance. The limits vary, and the policy holder pays more for higher limits.

The question of whether you have a legitimate complaint against SF for the non-coverage of your expenses depends on what the policy coverage is.

Without knowing more, I would say I am not surprised by your experience. I do not have personal health insurance, and if I had an accident I wouldn't have thought to expect or ask my car insurance to cover my injuries.

Sounds like your friend did not have adequate insurance coverage. You need to sue your friend for your damages, including medical bills.

Sounds like your friend had a maximum of $1,000 in passenger coverage. This should not be a complaint against State Farm as they simply refused to pay for more coverage than your friend purchased from them.

The insurance coverage your friend had was not adequate and isn't meant for substantial injuries. You'll have to use your medical insurance (if you have it) or, sue your friend for your medical bills.
