Ford Motor - Station Wagon Theft

SAGINAW, MICHIGAN -- Lately Ford motors has featured a comic style commercial featuring some poor soul trying to get into the back of a station wagon with an armload of packages.
His problem is finally solved by pressing a foot pedal at the rear of the vehicle to open the car and insert the packages.
My question is "doesn't this allow any thief from doing the same thing and making off with the vehicle"?
It doesn't seem too safe to me.

I've had the same exact question as you. I thought maybe they have to unlock it with their remote keychain first.
Also, I wonder how many people lose their balance with their arm full of packages when they try to open it that way. I think it's a stupid idea and one that the company will use as a selling point, and charge extra for, then once people get it, they most likely won't ever use it.
And another thing I wonder about...how many people will get bopped under their chin or their face when they realize they have to go up to it to activate it, then quickly step backwards when the hatch flies up.
What happens if you're backing up and there is a snow pile behind you and it hits that spot?

as i understand this new feature, it uses a 'smart' key. the switch will not operate unless the owners key is within a certain distance from the vehicle.
