ELK AVE. ELIZABETHTON, TENNESSEE -- I went to the Elizabethon, tn. Walmart on 2-6-13. Me and my husband proceeded to lay our purchases on the counter and the cashier said we were laying too many things on the counter and refused to check our groceries out until we took put some things back in the buggy. Well, I took some things off the counter then when I started putting them back up there, she said I told you not to put all that stuff up there, stopped the transaction, so I just put one thing at a time on the counter to the [snip] [snip] rang everything up. I was so upset. Me and my husband couldn't believe the way she acted. I was so embarrassed. When I got back to our car I called the manager and told her what happened, she said that she would have a talk with her. I have never had a problem with any other Walmart except the one one elk ave. The cashiers are always rude. I will never go back there again.

Walmart CEO Mike Duke made the Forbes list of the top five WORST CEOs who should have been fired a long time ago. Given the current state of affairs at walmart these days I wholeheartedly agree. I’d rather lick a frozen rusty pump handle than shop at walmart. And I used to love walmart.

Mike Duke do the honorable thing and fall on your sword.

It doesn't suprise me. There is no reason for any cashier to be so rude. I like to put all the stuff on the belt or counter so I can monitor if the items are being rang up at the correct price, I do that to any store I go to. The cashier was making more work for the customer.
Doesn't suprise me about being on the top 5 for worst CEO.

since the counters are small in the 20 items and under lanes, i can understand the cashiers request.

No where did the OP say she was at the 20 item or less lane. I agree with Yoke, I like to put all my items up also when I am using the regular lanes and monitor the items for the correct price. I have stopped an incorrect price several times that way. Also when I do my weekly grocery shopping, I leave my soda's, water, or heavy items on the bottom of the cart, so I like to have the rest of the items up on the counter to where as they are bagged I can put them back in the cart I have. Otherwise they just grab another cart and fill it up as they run out of room for the bagged groceries, which means I have to move the heavy items after scanning to the new cart, something I was trying to avoid in the first place. Regardless of why the cashier wanted the items done the way she did, there was no excuse for the rudeness. It's not good customer service.

My guess was the same as MadC's conclusion - that this may have been an express lane, possibly without a conveyor.

Granted, the OP didn't state this was the case, but it's sketchy customer service. Not totally shocking, given that the setting was WalMart. Our prices are the lowest and our customer service is the worst.

At the Walmart by me, Mad, some of the regular order lanes have those small counters too. Very annoying

I'm wondering if the customer was stacking the merchandise on the belt. In that case everything just falls all over place like the floor, and most annoyingly, the scanner everytime the belt moves.
