If this kind of snapshot hype, or other awards from other insurance companies are true, I shouldn't be paying a cent for car insurance. It's just not going to happen, if it sounds too good to be true..

I'm not real big on having an insurance company upload my driving information no matter what they say about discounts and such. Anyway, the addition of some system like this on my old clunker would probably kill it, so I'll just stick with my present insurance company that just gives me cheap rates for not getting in an accident. If you get this little device, who hooks it up? And what does Progressive do with the personal data they mine from your car?

I have had progressive for the last few years. I tried their snapshot and only received a 3% discount, probably due to my pedal to the metal driving habits. My parents used the snapshot and they received a 20% discount. It doesn't record much. It basically checks for hard stops, which is is measured by the speed dropping 10 mph or more in less than 7 seconds I believe. You can view the info it collects online. All it records is the speed and how many hard stops you do. not location or anything else. If you are constantly slamming your brakes, then it will register that. I think to get the maximum discount, they want to see 3 or less within a 30 day period. If you are a responsible driver and drive like a normal person and not Mario Andretti, then you can earn a decent discount with it.

The snapshot is connected to the OBD 2 port on a vehicle. This is the same port auto repair shops hook their scanners up to. This port is only powered when the ignition is on.

I think your battery and alternator failure were caused by another electrical problem. If you alternator was going bad then it wasn't charging your battery properly and that is what ended up draining the battery. Also a bad battery also has the potential to kill the alternator.
