REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA -- Racism at GNC - I have been a member of GNC, gold card, member for more than 15 years. I have had mixed experiences at various GNC stores. When I went to GNC, Redondo Beach last week, February 6, 2013 at approx. ... 6:00 pm, I was the only person in the store. I am a very attractive, mature, African -American female. When I went to GNC last week to purchase my monthly products, I was the only customer in the store.

This young Hispanic lady followed me around the store as if I was going to steal something. Everywhere I went, she had to come and pretend to be restocking merchandise. When I asked her questions about the products, she knew absolutely nothing. Three Hispanic young men came into the store. I noticed that she did not follow them.

I wrote a letter of complaint and left it for the manager, along with my phone number. The manager has yet to call me.

Did you have a large purse with you? That seems to catch the attention of employees and they are trained to watch people with large purses or bags...I'm thinking the three guys didn't have any large purse with them, so they were not being watched as closely.

Possibly the store is having a problem with some African American females who are shoplifting. Because you fit the profile you were watched more closely. Don't take this as a personal attack. Unfortunately it only takes a few dishonest people to ruin it for the vast majority of honest African Americans.

It could have been several things. It could be the OP indeed did have a large purse which requires a close eye on from the store employee. Perhaps the OP resembles someone who has been a problem in the past with shoplifting. Maybe the store employee genuinely was stocking shelves. GNC stores are tiny, so its impossible to be anywhere in the store and not have a employee(s) pretty much on you. It is not uncommon for people to mis-evaluate situation. Case in point: When I worked retail, I had a black woman scream at me because I asked for I.D. when she presented a check. She was angry because I did not ask the white person before her for I.D. when they too presented a check. I tried to explain to her that was because it WAS MY OWN MOTHER, but she wasn't hearing me, she screamed racism and stormed out of the store. I'm sure, in this woman's mind, she believes to this day she was victim of racial discrimination and she was in fact NOT! She "assumed" before getting all the facts. Had she calmly asked me why I asked for her I.D. and not the previous customer's, I could have explained to her that the previous customer was my mother and I didn't need her license to verify she is indeed the person she is claiming to be. Anyway, hopefully, either GNC Corporate or the Franchise owner (if there is one) will respond.

It could have been that the young lady working at this GNC is racist. Ya know that is a possibility. Racism does exist.

As a middle aged white male I never have to put up with this nonsense but if I did it would piss me off to no end. What passes for frontline workers these days I'll tell ya what.
