DirectTV - Denied Job

Complaint

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA -- Hi everyone, my name is Erick and I am a college student. A few years ago, I got arrested (and yes, felony charges) and the judge sentenced me to probation and gave me a withheld; meaning I am not a convicted felon.

I went to apply to Direct TV and the moment the leading man asked about my history, he said "I can't hire someone who has committed an act of dishonesty."

I was kicked out and asked to leave and not even given a chance to be heard. Now, I am respectful and courteous, and I understand a history is a history, but since that time of my life I have gone back to college, gotten my Associates Degree, and finishing up my Bachelors. The people I saw working there were a bunch of slow, sleazy, and insipid individuals who couldn't tell you the difference between an antenna and dish.
For not hiring someone 'dishonest' they sure do a lot of dishonest acts. They charged my mom $198.85 for a BASIC subscription!!! They insisted she signed for it but I was there! DirectTV are the most lying, deceiptful, and incredulous company I have ever heard of. DO NOT buy from them or waste your money. Don't even bother applying for a job there if you have ever had a run in with the law because they apparently like to keep top of the line Harvard educated students there. A big freaking joke.

I'm sorry to hear that. I believe everybody deserves a second chance to prove themselves but what can you do? Although we live in a supposedly Christian nation the notion of redemption is not so popular in these United States these days.

Depending upon your circumstances and the laws in your state you may be able to get your skirmish with the law expunged. You might want to contact an attorney to explore your options. I'm assuming you're a young man so it's probably well worth looking into.

Good luck.

How would they even know you were charged with a felony if you didn't disclose it to them? If the judgement was "withheld," I wouldn't even think it would show up on a background check. And most places will only want to know about felonies that you have been convicted of.

All that said, you're probably better off not working for them anyway.

Unfortunately with the way the economy is employers can be really picky about who they hire. My brother has a DUI and has been sober since the 5 years since he has gotten it (it was our miracle that he was finally arrested and nobody got hurt). He has been out of work for months and has not been able to get a job. He was really close to getting a job until his DUI came up and the girl who was ready to hire him told him she was not allowed to hire him, even though he was qualified, because her headquarters will not allow them to hire anyone with a background at this time. She was so upset that she could not hire him.

Be assured, DirecTv does do background checks.
Consider if they hired someone who had a felony conviction, and sent this person to your home. Something disappeared, and you found a felon had been hired to come into your house. The lawyers would have a field day.

When you break the law you are punished if caught. The punishment doesn't always stop when you leave the jail cell. I have a hard time having sympathy for you, not because you committed a felony, but because even though you proclaim to be respectful and courteous you stated "The people I saw working there were a bunch of slow, sleazy, and insipid individuals who couldn't tell you the difference between an antenna and dish" Based on your own words I think Direct Tv made the right choice.

I am a tech rep with Directv. You can NOT have any felonies on your background check..and it stated that right in the application. Not only for field techs, as a phone tech, I have access to crditcard numbers...DTV is a great place to work. Almost every complaint is from customers always late w payments, have had service interruptions for non payments. Also I read a disclosure, a third ptry company reads a disclosure, an email/snail mail disclosure AND it is in your customer agreement that you get in the beginning. And you do not get service without agreeing. Read it or listen ..it's there..
