MICHIGAN -- We decided to pay for our 2014 license plate which cost $86 dollars with our debit card. The transaction went through as it should.

When I got home I checked the account on my computer and discovered that the agency charged me $87.72, a buck 72 more than the original 86 dollars.

I called to complain and discovered that they charged an extra buck seventy two, a 2% charge for using a debit card but nowhere is it noted on any paperwork relating to the transaction.

This from the state of Michigan.
$1.72 isn't gonna break me, it's just the idea that they don't inform you!

My state DMV charges a fee also, for certain kinds of electronic payments, evidently to recover the ACH fee. On the wall in the office, there are signs dotted around that say so.

If there is a fee, it should definitely be stated somewhere, as you say.

So does mine. I don't mind the fee for renewing online since I'd spend more in gas getting to the DMV, but it's because of fees like that that I still carry a checkbook.

I don't believe they're allowed to charge a fee for a debit card, only a credit card.
You may want to look into it. I'm not sure if that's a state by state law. I remember reading a couple weeks ago that the fee didn't apply to debit.
It's possible they processed it as a credit though.

Be glad you are not dealing with California DMV. They would not be able to figure out how much your license would be without hours of paperwork

It's impossible anyone can keep up with the various state laws. In my state (county) there is a $1.00 charge to have the new tag or renewal sticker for the existing tag mailed. There's no way I would stand in that line to save $1.00. To my knowledge there is no extra charge for using a credit/debit card.
