Kelloggs - Bugs in Cereal

Raisin Bran - Complaint

MERCER, PENNSYLVANIA -- Bugs(moths and maggots)were infesting my house when I finally found the source it was a box of Kelloggs Raisin Bran that I had been eaten out of. I had bought 2 boxes of the cereal so I checked the unopened box (bag sealed) and it also had bugs. When I contacted the company, they said they would compensate for the 2 boxes and were sorry. The bugs probably got in at the store.

I got the feeling they had no intention to find and remove any other boxes at Walmart where I bought the cereal. I got an Oh well, sorry, here is some more Raisin Bran! Really! I don't want any cereal of any kind now! I am gagging just thinking about it. Like I would keep anything else in the cabinate, that may have gotten infested. I called Walmart and got pretty much the same enthusiasm! It appears I am just another complaint among many. I am still finding worms and moths in my house! Ugghhh!

I believe this is probably a distribution or WalMart issue, as the Kellogs rep suggested. The rep should have taken the store information and at least said they would follow up on the complaint.

WalMart should have shown more concern, but it is WalMart. Their reputation precedes them.

Of course you were disgusted. I was as well when I found bugs in my pantry, not once but twice. The first came from an unopened bag of cornmeal and the second from an opened bag of flour. I was not a happy camper taking everything from the pantry and cleaning it thoroughly. Now, I open as soon as I get home, inspect and then place in my freezer until used.

I purchase very little cereal but can imagine there might on occasion be bugs there, even from a busy grocery that regularly rotates stock and has incoming shipments daily. About all a store can do is offer a refund or a replacement.

Bugs are a part of life and our food. The FDA actually allows a certain percentage of bug parts in our food. If you only knew how many bugs you unknowingly consume, you would never eat again.

I once found bread at Walmart that had been eaten into by rodents. I confronted the manager and was told "it must have happened at the bakery". On a subsequent visit, I found several loaves with the same evidence that a rodent was eating into the product. After moving the stock around on the display I found not only rodent droppings but "glue traps" the store had placed in the display for rodents. I informed the health department and have not shopped for groceries at Walmart since.

If I were a rodent I'd definitely take up residence at Walmart.

if these are truly some type of grain bug, they can come from anywhere, your very own pantry, the store, the manufacturing plant. grain bugs can invade even the best sealed packages.

If the bag was sealed and there were no other holes evident I'd say it happened in packaging at the plant, but that is just my observation. I agree with Chaparrita, if you knew what the FDA allows in there products you wouldn't ever want to leave home again, or eat.
