Esalon - Uses your email address even if you don't use them...
"Individualized" hair color - Complaint
CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA -- I saw an article on esalon, where they "individualize" hair color and ship it to you. It is an interesting and to some, a useful idea. A form comes up with questions about one's hair, etc... to customize the color (honestly, it didn't seem any different than the colors in the store). I had to sign in with my email address, so I did. I started answering the questions to see where it would go. I figured if I didn't want the product, I could close the site and be done with it. I decided I didn't want the product and closed out the site. That was it. Wrong!!!
I received the following email hours later:
Perfecting your hair color at home just got easier.
Unlike other hair color products available, with our revolutionary new technology, we can custom blend your hair color specifically for you.
The results speak for themselves - superior, long lasting, salon quality results, without the price tag.

I did not check any box saying I wanted email. I closed out the site prior to completing the profile. There was no way to check that I didn't want email, and there was no way to unsubscribe. I did a return on the message and told them to take me off the mailing list. I received a message back stating they took me off the list. The message stated:
"Thank you for contacting us. We apologize for any confusion. We you create a profile with eSalon we ask our clients to provide a email address. We ask for this information because we are a internet based company, so most of our communication to our clients is done via email. We do not share this information with any third parties.
Per your request, we have unsubscribed you from our emails, so you'll no longer receive information from eSalon."
Interestingly, I left the site before completing a profile. Of course most of their communication is via email. It is the same for most internet companies! I found that lame. Most internet companies have a check-off if you don't want mail. I called and the response was basically - you gave us your email, so we used it. You contacted us and we removed it. That would be fine if I used the company - I didn't. I believe esalon should only contact those who complete the profile. I don't think I will be using them or recommending them.
