SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS -- Yesterday I bought a 10 pound bag of frozen chicken thigh/leg quarters from a Sav-Mor store in Pompano Beach, Fl. When I got home I discovered they had been thawed and refrozen.

It was 1 big clump of chicken parts all frozen together. I placed them in the sink filled with cold water to thaw. When thawed they all had fat, I mean fat skins and all the fat skin taken from the back rolled up in the center of the quarters. I cut those pieces out and weighed them, mind you not the skin covering the legs or thighs, just the extra rolled up fat. That fat weighed 15.6 ounces, again not counting the skin of the quarters. The skins of the legs and thighs weighed 19.2 ounces.

They leave the back bone and tail intact. So with the back bone, leg bone and the thigh bone, and all the fat this is a very poor buy and a very poor source to buy from.

I stopped buying chicken leg / thigh quarters of ANY type. Just like you found, there is too much unuseable stuff on them these days - the tail, the back, all the fat - even the kidneys sometimes. Junk. Not worth it even if it is less per pound.
