CORPUS CHRISTI & HARLINGEN, TEXAS -- About 3 weeks ago I noticed a crack extending the full length of the panel just below the dash and above the glove box. I was in Corpus Christi Texas on 6-6-13 and asked the Toyota dealership there if they would look at this problem and tell me what could be done about it. He replied "yea we have seen a lot of 06, 07, and 08 models with that problem". He then went on to say that you couldn't replace only the panel that was affected, but the entire dash had to be replaced at the cost of over 2,000.00 dollars.

I also had the dealer in Harlinge Texas look at the damage and he said basically the same thing, only his price was 1,700.00 dollars. My car is an 08 Avalon and is in great shape because I take good care of it. This is the second Avalon I have owned and the 5th Toyota product I have bought. What a crappy materials product you have fostered on your faithful customers. This damage is in no way my fault and you and the Toyota dealers know it.

Please have the respect to get back with me on this matter. Because as it stands right now you have lost a Toyota customer.

Waiting to hear from you,
Judith Oden

You can file a complaint with the NHTSB at this link:

Other than that, good luck.

Consider putting a custom made dash mat over it. While this won't fix the issue, it will provide some relief from having to look at it every time you are in the car. A custom made mat costs around $75, and make sure it is actually custom made, as some of the less expensive products don't lay flat on the dash.

It is highly unlikely that Totota will do anything about this. First and foremost, is not a part involved in the mechanical or electrical operation of the car. Sadly, as consumers we often pay the price for things that prematurely fail due to material quality or poor design.
