ROANOKE, VIRGINIA -- I had a horrible experience at Banfield inside Pet Smart. My 8 lb Chihuahua had a heart murmur and fluid in her lungs. She was given Lidocaine to numb her so they could turn her upside down to remove fluid,, it stopped her heart, anesthesia can kill a dog especially with heart problems. She was revived, had a good EKG, and was responsive to me but still under and not out of recovery. I wanted to take her home, put her on heart meds but they encouraged me to put her down. I was only told that her rib MAY have been broken from heart massage, there was no other reason given to me to indicate euthanasia.

I am a senior and was there alone and they saw someone they could manipulate. I am depressed at the loss of my beloved pet. I wish I had taken her off the table, There were 3 vet techs and 2 DVM in the exam room, and I believe it was a tutorial. The exam room was posed, she didn't have to die. My other Chihuahua is suffering, and depressed, I don't know what to do. I did not know there were thousands of complaints on this corporate vet hospital.

I am sorry for your loss. Pets can at times be like children and their loss can be very painful. Pets can suffer just like humans and sometimes it is better for the pet to peacefully surrender to its ills. There is not enough information to determine if this was the case in your pets ordeal but it certainly leans towards that scenario. We do not do our pets any favor by prolonging what could be a very painful life. You did not fail your beloved pet and you should not blame yourself. Of course you are sad at a time like this but true love for a pet sometimes means that our own needs for companionship must take a back seat. Try to focus on all the good times you and your pet shared.

Many dogs have been put on medication and lived for months or years. They even admitted that she could live. They never gave her a chance to even come out of recovery.
