Auto Europe - Rented Three Cars in France, Six Plus Rental Problems in France
Customer Service (hah!) - Complaint
PORTLAND, MAINE -- I recently returned from my trip to the Nice area and called Auto Europe customer service department. They explained that I had to send an e-mail detailing my problems/issues.
1. I asked for a 2nd driver and was quoted, via my telephone conversation with AutoEurope, a fixed rate of approximately $30usd. The woman I spoke with today was able to see the exact quote on my rental record.
I was charged 9.18euros per day for twelve (12) instead of the quoted rate I'd agreed to.
Please fix this first issue.
2. I was traveling with three adults and two teenagers. We planned to do some serious mountain driving in both France and Italy. I did inform AutoEurope of my intent to drive to Italy and received a confirmation e-mail accepting the two country rental.
The car I rented as you'll see from my attached voucher was a:
Car Type: BMW X1 or similar
Car Description: Standard,4 Door Car, Automatic, With A/C.
Here's a comparison review between the two vehicles, the BMW SUV and the Citroen Hatchback:

The car I received in Nice was a Citroen DS5. I've attached the CarBuyer review on this vehicle. It was not safe for mountain driving in any country let alone France or Italy. It was a narrow, very low lying sedan not a hybrid SUV like the BMW X1 I'd rented.

After some very frightening mountain drives I called AutoEurope to ask for a replacement vehicle. Unfortunately the French air traffic controllers strike was happening and I was informed that there were no cars available as a result.
So we continued our trip in a vehicle not intended for mountain driving and put ourselves at risks we hadn't intended to take when we used AutoEurope as our rental agent.
Please refund some portion of my payment since I never would have rented a Citroen and would have been happy to pay another rental company to supply me with the type of vehicle that I knew we needed for our summer vacation.
I'm disappointed in the last three rentals I made with AutoEurope; two last summer and one this summer. I expect a higher level of service and professionalism from an American company and have not received it.
Wrong cars, wrong rental locations (airport versus train station), wrong amounts, wrong vendors (Hertz versus Eurocar). So many problems.
3. I received a charge on my American Express card yesterday for $115.95. I was told during my call today that this was an 'airport fee' and that a receipt will be sent to me. At this point, I will accept this alleged fee and await the receipt. If the receipt does not arrive, I shall call American Express and have them handle this unknown charge.
Auto Europe has good prices - if you get what you purchased (I didn't), if you're charged what they quote and shows on your voucher (I wasn't) and if you don't mind spending many extra hours on vacation trying to rent your vehicle. You get what you pay for!
I won't make this mistake again.
