Renter's Insurance on Storage Unit
CHEEKTOWAGA, NEW YORK -- At the beginning of May 20l3 I went to the local Public Storage to rent one of their units. They tried to coerce me into purchasing a lock for $l7.95 and renter's insurance for $9.00 monthly additional. I was told the purchase of the lock was optional but the insurance was NOT. Reluctantly, I signed up for the insurance although I already had my own renter's insurance.
I returned in a couple of days to cancel their insurance assuring them that my own insurance covered the storage unit because they had given me a list of questions to ask my insurance company about the coverage of the unit. I was under the impression when signing the cancellation paper that I would receive a refund of the $9.00. This was not the case and instead I received a check for $.58, yes that is fifty-eight cents. After going back and forth with the local Public Storage for two weeks, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in New York State which they then transferred to the LA Bureau because that is where their headquarters are located. I was just notified today that the complaint remains unanswered and I am certainly not surprised.
I believe that Public Storage is not a trustworthy organization to do business with. Since filing my BBB complaint I have gone back to the local Public Storage website to see if I could write a review locally and every time I do they have again raised their prices, which to me would be another sign of shoddy business practice.
