Budget Car Rental - Took My Money, Then Refused to Rent Me a Car
KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE -- I made an online reservation, and paid the total in advance. When I arrived to pick up the car, I was told I would need to secure a $100 deposit on a credit or debit card. I didn't have a problem with that. They tried to run my debit card, but it wouldn't go through. I thought it was strange, but believed that a recent bank deposit hadn't been processed and that perhaps by the next morning the funds would be available. This would put me in a time crunch for making it to the airport (a three hour drive) on time the next morning, but figured I could make it work.
When I tried to change the reservation to the next morning, I was told that the car had already been "checked out" to me, so the reservation couldn't be changed but that I would have to apply for a refund (which would take 72 hours to process) of the first reservation (less a $10 cancellation fee!) and make a new reservation. I got to the rental office a few minutes before they opened in the morning and waited. And waited. And waited. When they finally arrived, the man took my driver's license and debit card, and then informed me that he would not be able to rent a car to me because my credit score wasn't high enough. What?!
If I had been told this the previous day, I could have made alternate plans, but instead I had to cancel my entire vacation because I couldn't make last-minute arrangements and still get to the airport on time. They had no problem taking my money, and then didn't even tell me the real reason for the difficulties the first day. They let me believe my bank was to blame, instead of just telling me they didn't want my business. Well, no problem there - I've rented a moving truck from Budget twice in the past, but I will NEVER do business with them again.
