Ordered trial subscription for 1-year and told the representative no renewal unless I called them to renew. They automatically renewed, I called to cancel, supervisor said he had cancelled it but I would have to pay for the days following my paid to subscription date, I said I would not that I did not ask for service during that time period, he said don't worry they would "write it off".

I just got my credit card statement and they billed me for those days ($13) plus another year ($147). DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO!

That's right, ask them to invoice you. It will cost you a couple bucks more but you will save in the long run especially if you want to cancel the following year.
Also with an invoice you can negotiate a much better price since they can't just charge your credit card with the much higher price when your subscription gets close to running out.

I've been paying about $85 per year for the last five years.

I pay $25 every 6 months for Sirius in my car. You might ask what discounts they have.
