American Express - Made an Overpayment; Takes 7 Days for Them to PROCESS Refund
Customer Service - Complaint
DALLAS, COLORADO -- American Express refunds money 7 days after they receive a claim; not 7 days after a payment is posted, no matter when the customer calls to make a request.
7/10/13: I discovered I made an OVERPAYMENT of $32,300 to American Express. It was my error (used bill pay through bank and entered one too many characters). Same time, I contacted my bank to see if they could help - was told it would take 10 days to resolve and they recommended I contact Amex.
7/10/13: I contacted Amex who told me the payment hadn't been posted to the account; it takes 24-48 hrs to post before they can do a refund and I would have to call back.
7/11/13: Spoke to someone in customer service who told me that it would take 7 days to refund the money because the money had to clear the bank. (The amount now showed posted on 7/10/13.) Was told they would wire the funds back to my bank account after the 7 days. (I assumed the 7 days would be from 7/10/13 - the day the amount was posted to my account.)
7/14/13: Spoke to customer service who said payment had to clear before refund was made. Verified they showed a refund was to be made.
7/16/13: My bank customer service called and created a 3-way call with Amex. Was told they showed I called on the 12th to request a refund (I called on the 11th), and the refund would be sent 7 days from the 12th, not the 10th. Spoke to a supervisor, who confirmed that Amex refunds money 7 days after a claim is made. They are not like typical vendors who, if they've had the money for 7 days, will issue a refund.
SUMMARY: They received the payment on the 10th, I called the 11th, but they show I requested the refund on the 12th. I won't get my money back until 7/23.
