CINCINNATI, OHIO -- Avoid McCluskey's service department at all cost, especially if you have an older model. Technicians are incompetent; management is dishonest, abusive and unconcerned about their customers' safety. From January through June 2013, I had substantial work done by McCluskey on my 2002 Prizm, much of which involved the electrical system. On June 21, the car broke down. McCluskey's technician claimed this was due to another electrical problem. I was charged $845.75 for six hours of labor to check the electrical system and replace a circuit board. The car was in the shop for a full week during which time I had to rent a car.

While the car was in the shop, I was unable to get straight answers about what the problems was or when the work would be finished. I was planning to drive to Virginia on June 29 and repeatedly asked McCluskey to do a safety check to ensure that the car was safe to drive. The technician assured me the car was safe, but while driving to Virginia I found numerous problems that did not exist before McCluskey worked on the car, including a broken headlight, non-functioning dashboard illumination and warning lights and dangerous handling due to vibration in the steering. I was unable to continue driving after dark. In Virginia, I took the car to a shop I had patronized when I lived there. The owner of the shop informed me that the electrical system had been badly damaged by an incompetent mechanic. I had to pay several hundred dollars to repair the electrical problems caused by McCluskey. The owner did not charge me for approximately ten hours of work he did on the electrical system to correct these problems. I also had to pay for additional repairs related to safety issues that had not been detected by McCluskey.

After I returned to Cincinnati, I went to McCluskey to complain about the quality of their work and failure to address safety issues and was subjected to extreme verbal abuse by service manager, Mr. [snip], who said my car was "junk," a "mechanic's nightmare" and that I was "crazy" to drive it a long distance. He told me to leave and file a complaint with the BBB if I was unhappy. Shortly thereafter, the car developed the same problem which it had on June 28. I took it to another repair shop in Cincinnati, which correctly diagnosed the problem as a bad MAF sensor. The car has been running fine since then. The owner of this shop told me it is common knowledge that McCluskey cannot handle repairs on older cars. He assured me my car is in good enough shape to drive to California. Essentially, McCluskey messed up my car's electrical system, charged me $845.75 for unnecessary work which made the situation worse and failed to diagnose the real problem. I have filed a BBB complaint asking to be reimbursed for the unnecessary and incompetent work performed by McCluskey. McCluskey's president, Mr. [snip], has filed a two sentence response saying McCluskey is not responsible for any of these problems.

This would be a perfect case for Small Claims Court.

since you have two 'experts' tell you about the bad workmanship have them write you a letter and sue McCluskeys in small claims court. Easy and fast. You should be glad you only paid once but a refund for what they did is in order and you should consider sending some $$ to the shop that worked on your car for free. They deserve a pat on the back.

The BBB does absolutely nothing for you except keep your complaint in a file. They will not attempt to get your money back from the mechanic.

I appreciate the comments from each one of you. On August 19, the president of McCluskey Chevrolet has contacted me and has acknowledged my dissatisfaction with my experience. He has agreed to fairly compensate me. McCluskey Chevrolet has acted in good faith to satisfactorily resolve this situation and I no longer feel wronged.
