Humana Dental - Non Payment of Legitimate Expenses
Preventive Treatment Of Teeth and Gums - Complaint
LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY -- I chose Humana Dental Insurance through Extend Health, a DuPont provider of Health Insurance for its reitirees. They declined to pay for cost of cleaning my teeth with the excuse that the gums were checked on the same day. This is a procedure followed by most dentists. Humana claims that their payment policies prohibit them from paying for two procedures performed on the same day. This is not in their policy statement sent to either Extend Health or me. Their claim is that the policy is implemented at the payment level and should be known to the dentists involved. My dentist claims that this is the first case he has had where Humana has stated that they have such a restricted policy. I deduce that unless one belongs to a group, Humana avoids paying legitimate expenses. Their customer service adopted a rather belligerent tone. This type of abuse should be well publicized and points to a need for government regulations to prevent bad practices.
