Thunder Over Louisville Informative - Fireworks and Air Show

Review by 18841 on 2006-04-21
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY -- Http://www.thunderoverlouisville.org/
check out their website, it's pretty cool by itself.
---------------------------------------------
The Kentucky Derby is 2 weeks from tomorrow. The KY Derby Festival kicks off tomorrow with an event called Thunder Over Louisville. Thunder Over Louisville is North America's biggest fireworks show. It takes place downtown on the Ohio River. The 2nd Street Bridge is closed down and most of the fireworks come from there. Also, many barges have fireworks firing. Weather permitting, there is an air show that starts in the afternoon. It's pretty impressive too. This event has been going on for 15 years or more. The crowd will probably be over 300,000. Not sure what the record crowd has been, but the shoreline in Louisville and Sounthern Indiana is packed with spectators. Some camp out the night before to get a good spot. Anyone within driving distance should try to see it at least once in-person, especially if you have children. If you're interested in seeing it on the web, go to www.WLKY.com tomorrow and they will be streaming their coverage. This is the first year for WLKY to cover this event so I don't know how well they will do. I hope they do us proud.

The Thunder website says that 500,000 people come out to see it. That could be a bit optimistic, but maybe not. No way to count people that are so scattered about! You can see the fireworks from many rural areas depending on the terrain.

Great spectacle, but difficult to park and get in and out of, as the roads get choked with cars. Having seen the event from "ground zero" a few years back, I can say that it's unlike any air/fireworks show in the world. Is it being Webcast Sheriff?
