Oceanside school district long Island NY Complaint - - Special Education Services & Other Services

Review by big momma on 2006-05-12
OCEANSIDE DISTRICT # 11, NEW YORK -- My husband and I returned home last May with 2 beautiful children we adopted from Russia. My son 4 at that time, we new he had a speech and language problem, so as soon as we returned to the states we requested from our school district OCEANSIDE( which we pay a huge amount of school taxes)that he be evaluated. The evaluation did bi-lingual with a Russian interpreter concluded he was severely delayed in his native language, and his IQ way below normal range. The recommendations were for speech and language therapy as well as special ed services, the school denied my son all services and are now asking us to comply with them and leave him back in kinder garten, reasons being because of his speech and language issues he has been unable to do the academic work this year in kindergarten. In short he just lost this whole school year and nothing can bring it back, and we can not afford private Tudors. I have been fighting with the school all year, and they just refuse to give my son the help he so desperately needs.
Thank You

This is a shot in the dark, but have your son re-evaluated again by a professional. Then again by another. Document everything. The U.S. has a law that guarantees schooling for every child, and that schooling must coincide with hsi abilities. If you can PROVE he needs special assistance, the school system is obligated to give it to him under the law. Fight for this and don't give up until your son gets what he needs!

He started kindergarten at age 5 of 2005, they want him to repeat the school year for kindergarten next year, he will be 6.

On second thought, would it be so horrible for him to stay another year? I stayed in preschool for 2 years because emotionally and socially I wasn't at an appropriate level. Perhaps having him stay another year to assimilate to the language and culture may help prevent bigger problems down the road.

You can't afford private tutors but you could afford to go all the way to Russia and bring back two kids, seems odd not to anticipate some of these expenses.
Anyway, staying in kindergarten is not the end of the world, five is very young and like Cobra said another year to catch up might not hurt at all. Things move really fast in school after first grade so a successful kindergarten experience would likely help.

There's nothing wrong with holding a kindergarten back, he'll be more mature when he goes into 1st grade. I don't think they should start school when they're 5 anyways.
