Middle Georgia Cox communications Complaint - Charged for "damage to converter box"

WARNER ROBINS, GEORGIA -- For over 27 years, I have been a "loyal" customer of Middle Georgia Cox Communication. Recently, I decided to switch to DirectTV (because they are offering more channels for less money). When I returned the three digital converter boxes, I was asked why I terminated the service. I told the technician that I was going to another provider (I guess that was my mistake). A couple of days later, I received a bill in the mail for $240.00, for damage to a converter box that was issued to me in 2004. Now, I don’t know what they do with their boxes, but most people (including myself), don’t bother the converter boxes after it has been installed. I feel that Cox Communication billed me because I switched to DirectTV. I never dreamed that I would be penalized for telling the truth (about switching to another company). I made an appointment with Cox’s representative to “see” the damage they are talking about. I feel that Cox Communications has had a monopoly on cable television for decades, now that is has some competition they have opted to play ’dirty’. I know that I am just a small consumer, and I don’t have the “lawyers” and big pockets that they have, but I will voice my opinion and let people know how they will be treated when/if they discontinue their services with this cable company.

You may be on to something. I returned a box to Cox that was damaged because it got thrown against the wall and also the remote control was in pieces and all they did was exchanged it for new equipment. No charge for damages.

Soooo Tysha, you never stated did you damage a box by accident when you had service? If you did, my guess is why would they charge you when you were still a customer? They do not want to chance losing a customer I bet, so they did not charge you for that reason. Those boxes cost from what I heard atleast $500.00 per box to them alone. I would not be complaining about that if I was you. You do the crime, you do the time. That is if you or someone did damage that box. They don't hand those out like that I am sure. Don't expect a hand out from any company. You want them to really raise all of our bills for people who damage their property? That is like me having to pay for everyone's welfare, because it is easier for them to watch us all work, while they sit on their couch watching Jerry Springer every day, while probably not paying their cable bill of course. Dont damage your Direct Tv receiver, or they might do the same thing to you.
