Target Complaint - Deceptive Sales Practices
HAMPTON, VIRGINIA -- Until recently Target has been a discount department store of choice for me, but the sales practices I experienced today at the Hampton VA store (1911 Saville Row , Hampton, VA 23666-4200 US, ph 757-827-7637) have changed my mind.
While shopping in ready-to-wear, I came across a display of Merino twinsets, identical styles in five colors, clearly marked "30% percent off originally marked price". There were no other styles on that table, and no other areas where this style was displayed. It was clear that all five colors were intended to be displayed where they were, because there were numerous sets of each in a range of sizes.
When I was checking out (at approximately 5:45 p.m.), I noticed that only one set rang up at the advertised sale price. I brought this to the attention of Kathleen, my cashier, and her first response was that perhaps the ones that were not ringing on sale had been mistakenly placed on the display. I told her that I doubted that, based on the state of the display as described in the previous paragraph. Then she told me that only those sets specifically marked would be discounted.
I asked to see the manager, fully expecting that the situation would quickly be resolved. Identical styles, stocked together, clearly marked "on sale" - the answer should be easy. However, when the front end manager, Linda, arrived to join us, she stated that Target often places sale and not sale merchandise together on sale displays, and that she would have to check with the the ready to wear department to see if really all of these items should be discounted.
The ready to wear saleslady (when she finally arrived) stated that not all of the sets were on sale, they were just displayed together.
No one in the store seemed to find it in the least deceitful that identical styles, displayed together under a sales sign, were not all actually on sale.
I, however, find that to be unethical, underhanded and annoying in the extreme. I chose not to purchase any of the items, and until I see evidence that Target Corporation does not encourage such deceptive practices, they will receive no more business from me or my family.
