Fun Sun Vacations Complaint - Honeymoon Nightmare
MAUI, HAWAII -- Ok, every holiday has it’s ups and downs and we all run into snags now and then but wait until you hear about my honeymoon that turned disastrous!
It was a beautiful day when we left Honolulu, Hawaii to go to Maui, Hawaii on September 09, 2001. Our honeymoon had been an incredible experience and well worth the $5,000+ we had spent in accommodations and airfare alone. Unfortunately that’s where it ended.
We hopped off the plane and into our white Sebring convertible and headed for Sugar Beach Resort. According to the Fun Sun Brochure, a superior property that was sure to please even a finicky princess.
We pulled into the parking lot and took a look around – apart from the barren dessert land to our right – it was okay – surely the unit would be much better!
We were registered at the front desk by a hot pink lipstick, gum smacking, big haired blond front desk clerk, given our keys and sent on our way.
We opened the door and took a look around – neither of us said a word – surely we had taken a wrong turn at the airport – This was not Maui – this was a mistake!!!! At best we were staying in a 3 star condo – not resort!!!!!
Not wanting to disappoint each other we didn’t say a word until later that night we started scouting for other places to stay. After driving down a winding road with huge trees on each side of the road, lush vegetation and the wind blowing through our hair, we pulled into the driveway of the Outrigger Wailea Resort – now this is what I am talking about! It was absolutely incredible.
We sat in our convertible looking absently over the grounds as a valet offered to take our keys, we shook our heads sadly as we stared off into the distance. Back to Sugar Dump…
As we never got a good look at the condo initially, when we came back for the evening, we noticed dead bugs on the floor, hair in the bathtub, old furniture that smelled of ‘old’ – you know the smell I am talking about – granny mothballs – yuck!
Well, we have to make the most of our honeymoon – surely our travel arrangements could be changed – I couldn’t imagine spending 7 nights at Sugar Dump. We would be happy to pay the upgrade as long as we got out!
We called our travel agent immediately in Toronto – she got our message the next morning and started working on the moving arrangements. Of course, nothing could be done until Monday as the offices were closed at Fun Sun in Edmonton.
The ‘friendly’ Fun Sun Vacation rep in Honolulu called me back Monday Morning and asked why we were unhappy. Hmmm…. Where to start…. Could it be the hair in the bathtub .. no, how about the dead bugs on the floor … could be the granny furniture that I had put towels on so we could sit down? Basically it’s not what we booked!!!! We wanted a superior property!!!!
Our Hawaiian Fun Sun rep argued with us that Sugar Dump hadn’t been rated in years – you probably booked your vacation from a brochure that was really old she stated. URGH!
We told her we wanted to be moved to a hotel property as the condo thing was obviously not for us! We wanted to lounge at a pool have drinks with umbrellas and pineapples in them served to us all afternoon and be able to charge it to my room – after all, it is my honeymoon – you know, that once in a lifetime trip where you live extravagantly and figure out the bills at a later date! In fact, I’ll make it really easy for you my friend, we had found a really great place that we would love to stay at – The Outrigger Wailea Resort! Make it happen!
With that information, she called us back to say it would be an additional $686 for the upgrade at the Outrigger – Fantastic – it was a little more than what we wanted to pay but in order to enjoy the rest of our honeymoon, it’s only right that we move. Here’s my mastercard number – make the arrangements. The only thing is, we have to charge you an additional 2 nights at the Sugar Dump Resort. Make a claim if you are unhappy about it we were told.
She called us back to tell us the pool was down at the Outrigger – but we could use their sister resort’s facilities – the Outrigger Wailea Resort – did I hear right? I replied, we’re going to the Outrigger Wailea Resort … no, I booked you at a really great CONDO she said (with no maid service, no bar boy, no charging drinks or food to rooms) The Palms at Wailea Outrigger. You have got to be kidding me!!!!!! What and where is the Palms at Wailea Outrigger???
She argued that the Palms at Wailea Outrigger was in fact the property we requested through our travel agent – although we or our travel agent had no idea the property existed. Our travel agent is obviously extra terrestrial and telepathically relayed a property that we or she didn’t know to Nonni in Honolulu.
Overall, we ended up at the Outrigger Wailea Resort finally for an additional $1200 where we did enjoy the rest of our vacation however our experience will always be engraved in our memories – we lost 2 days of our vacation at Sugar Dump. What a waste.
Surely the people at Fun Sun would understand – although we had a horrible experience in dealing with the Honolulu rep, we figured she was off her rocker. Any reasonable person would refund the 2 night penalty at Sugar Dump and pay the difference of the upgrade that we were misquoted. Good thing the pool was broken down, otherwise we would have shown up large as life at Outrigger Wailea Resort with no reservation.
Why am I contacting you? It’s quite simple actually.
I wrote my letter to Fun Sun – to several people at Fun Sun – including the owner Henry Bruinsma. I included the letter my travel agent wrote as well which collaborated my story.
He called me back at home one evening to discuss it with me. I was impressed! After listening to me, he said he would take everything into consideration and get to the bottom of it. I asked him to call my travel agent as well – if he was going to make a fair decision, he should hear from everyone.
I received the letter from my travel agent last week from the owner, Henry Bruinsma– she never forwards the letters to clients to this letter disturbed her. It was incredible that a professional person would right such a letter.
I ended up paying for 3 night’s at Sugar Dump (I stayed 2) and was reimbursed $543.00. Obviously I was not happy with the result.
Subsequently, Fun Sun Vacation Brochures were pulled off of every Flight Centre location as of September 2001. It was probably the straw the broke the camel’s back.
So, to get back to the initial question – why am I contacting you?
Well, to be honest, I am looking for justice! Although I am quite relieved and overjoyed to hear Flight Centre pulled all brochures off the shelves, I still am looking for the satisfaction of seeing my story in a publication or on file so this doesn’t happen to the next happy Honeymooning couple.
I trust this has been entertaining for you, if nothing else. I would be happy to go into more details (yes, there’s more unfortunately) if you feel the need to get a good chuckle. At least, someone can laugh at this as I haven’t reached that stage yet.
I appreciate your time in reading my story and hope you can help me in my quest for vendiction.
To help keep me as a potential future customer, I would like the following:
Would like the original amount requested back! 2 Nights at Sugar Dump back and difference between upgrade at Outrigger.
At the very least I would like a response from your company regarding this incident. Thank you for your time.
