Saturn Complaint - Saturn - Fraudulent Oil Change

Review by dar357 on 2006-06-20
MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Went to Saturn of Manchester (NH) in Dec. 2005 for an oil change - it was very cold & I didn't feel like performing the oil change myself. We had a free oil change coupon that came from the Saturn Hdqtrs. My wife bought her 2001 Saturn L200 at this dealership new. It only had 35k miles on it. We told them this car has had Mobil 1 Synthetic since it had 5,000 miles on the odometer. They agreed to change the oil & install Mobil 1 Synthetic. Within 1 month, another prominent automotive business owner noticed bluish smoke coming from the tailpipe when I started the car. He told me about it the next time he saw me. In March, I decided to change the oil myself & install Mobil 1 Synthetic, even though the oil Saturn installed only had 2,200 miles on it. I took 2 samples & saved the oil filter. I mailed 1 oil sample to a very reputable Co. named Staveley Services Fluid Analysis Co. (Cleveland, OH) for basic engine oil analysis & an FTIR Test to determine if the oil was Synthetic or not. When the test results came back, I was not surprised to see Saturn of Manchester had deceived me & installed garbage Mineral Oil when I specifically requested Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil.
The bluish smoke from the tailpipe halted immediately after I installed the Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil.
I don’t know what else to say but I will never have Saturn service my wife’s vehicle again.

Go to http://www.bbbnh.org click on Business Reliability Reports then Enter Company Name: Saturn of Manchester. Since this dealership is a member with a no complaints I would file a complaint with the bbb and ask to have your monies refunded for the oil analysis. Then ask that BBB for a company that does service for Saturns. Good luck

Doesn't Saturn own all of its own dealerships? I thought they were different in that way?

It sounded strange they would substitute that expensive oil for no extra charge. Now I see why. They figured you would never know the difference. It appears they were wrong.

dar357-I applaud that you retained an analytics company to look into the matter. Most concerning is the possibility that other drivers paid for synthetic, premium oil and didn't get it. Of course the dealer can rebut that you changed the oil yourself and may have submitted a "false" sample. It's worth a letter to the AG of your state. Nice post.

This is an ongoing problem with Saturn service departments. I have also had bad experinces with repairs that don't need to be done being suggested. Will never st foot in another GM dealership for any reason ever again. Nor will I buy another GM car. Too bad, used to be a good company.
