Settle Inn Informative - Bad stay at Overland Park, KS

Review by dealco on 2006-06-21
OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS -- I booked my reservation on hotels.com over 3 months ago. When I checked in for my 3-day, 2-night stay, they didn't even give me the room I requested. I had requested 2 double beds in a smoking room. When I got there, they gave me a non-smoking room. I asked the clerk if I could be transferred to another room that allowed smoking, referring to the fact that this was booked well over 90 days ago. She said (in a demeaning manner) "That is NOT a guarantee. It is only a request." She was "sorry", but she could give us 2 single rooms. I told her no way, I would wait for the maids to clean a smoking room. She said that wouldn't happen. I talked with the manager. Luckily, she informed us the maid is cleaning a room for us right now.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

This room had several ants, spiders and cobwebs in the ceiling corners, and was very dirty. I literally had BLACK feet from walking barefoot on the carpet. At night with just the TV on, I saw some larger bug scurry across the floor (I think it was a big Boxelder bug). The bathtub had rust, the door handle to the bathroom was falling off, and the front door would stick, so I had to "bust" it open with the side of my shoulder/arm.

I didn't stay the 2nd night, and luckily, they were able to refund my money for the second night. I WOULD STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM SETTLE INN, OVERLAND PARK AS POSSIBLE!!!

Thanks for the warning. Although I will say they excelled at customer service by getting you the requested room and then refunding your second night's unused charges. Most five stars wouldn't do that. Sounds like a low-budget, struggling establishment that's at least trying.

I wouldn't have stayed the first night, (if another choice was available.) I ALWAYS check out a room before I decide to stay.

You got lucky.

Do like my smoking cubicle rat partner does. Smoke in the room to your hearts delight. When you check out throw a screaming crying fit that the room smelled like smoke. Ask to see the manager and talk about your allergies (also works with rental cars)

I too would be grossed out by the bugs & filth and would have left. However, the smoing "request" is clearly stated on most major hotel polcies. And if your hotel considered it a "request" as you wrote than that's exactly what it is. It's not a guarantee. You can book a room 6 months ahead a request smoking...they don't do a thing with your request until they go to assign your room in the computer maybe a day or two prior to your arrival. Then as rooms are assigned and needed they give what they have as needed.
