Microwave Gold - Complaint
CHESTER, VIRGINIA -- I purchased a Whirlpool Gold Microwave (model #GH9185XLQ0, serial #TR M 30 14144) from Sears on 4/15/03. The microwave broke and I called the authorized repair service. A short caused the inverter to burn out along with the microcepter and the sub inverter. To repair all of this will cost $744.02 ($131 labor and $613.02 for parts). It costs more to repair it than it is worth. The repairman could not tell if the magnetron tube was bad or anything else until the other problems were fixed so repair could even cost more. Of course the microwave is no longer under warranty. I called Whirlpool customer service number and spoke with Mary. Mary sounded like a programmed recording. I'm sorry your microwave is no longer under warranty and since you did not purchase an extended warranty, Whirlpool will not pay for the repair. Surveys show that microwaves usually last approximately 7 years. Well, this is my response to that. I purchased the product with the expectation that it was a quality product and would last. I am about 4 years short of the survey results. My interpretation of buying an extended warranty is we make an inferior product that isn't going to last so pay more for it to guarantee repair when it breaks. I called the customer service expecting to talk with someone who would try to make things right and stand behind the product. It wasn't that she wasn't nice. She spoke in one tone and sounded like she was a robot--very cold. Needless to say that was not the response I was looking for. I am very upset with Whirlpool and its product. I expected more from your company. I expeced Whirlpool to do the right thing and stand behind its product even though it was not under warranty. This microwave should have lasted a long, long time.
