AMTRAK Informative - Amtrak Experience - Average
I rode with Amtrak today from Toledo, Ohio to Chicago, and then to Milwaukee. All in all, I would rate Amtrak a C for the experience. When I boarded the train at 5:10 AM, I was expecting someone to say hello, or something of that nature. I have rode with Amtrak in the past, so I guess this should just be expected. The train was dark, and freezing cold. No blankets are provided on the train. No announcements were made on the train, so by the time I discovered there was a Dining Car, I had missed breakfast. Bathrooms were gross, and obviously not cleaned even once a day. The attendant in my car was not rude, but not overly friendly either. We stopped for 90 minutes for a freight train, which is normal. During my connection in Chicago, I noticed there were a ton of homeless people in the station begging for money. Security did not seem to do anything to get these people to leave. If these people are so hungry, there are resources in Chicago where they can go to get food. The train to Milwaukee was by far much better. Very relaxing, CLEAN, and FRIENDLY ATTENDANT AND FRIENDLY CONDUCTOR. All in all, Amtrak is good for short distances. I would NEVER recommend it for travel longer than 10 hours. I would fly if it was that far away.
