Maytag Corporation Complaint - Severe & Continuing Mold in Washing Machine
OAK HARBOR, WASHINGTON -- I had intended to write a letter to Maytag today, complaining about the mold problem with our Neptune washer, purchased for $949.00 in January 2004. However, after reading the negative reviews posted on this site, I am thinking that it would be a waste of effort and that our family would be better off buying a new machine - but not a Maytag!
Mold on the washer's gasket starting developing soon after we purchased the machine. About that time, we heard of the class action suit and intended to join it, but my husband went to the local appliance dealer where we had purchased the machine to discuss it with them. The appliance dealer assured him that they had a fix for the problem. They sent a repairman to replace the gasket. I had also pointed out to my husband that when I spun the inner drum by hand, I heard water gushing in the machine. The appliance dealer said that this was not water - it was some other substance. I no longer believe this to be true as other reviewers have stated that water left in in the machine causes the mold. This makes sense.
Anyway, the big "fix" didn't last very long. The second gasket soon had big black mold spots on it. My husband again contacted the local appliance dealer, and once again, they came and replaced the gasket.
We are now unproud owners of this machine, with the third gasket hugely covered with black mold. Believing this to be a health hazard and believing that Maytag will not replace the washing machine and that the local appliance dealer can do nothing to permanently remedy the problem, we intend to purchase a new machine of a different brand. We will not buy it from the local appliance dealer.
