Lone Star Steakhouse Complaint - SHOCKING

Review by Hoosizzit on 2006-09-24
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA -- My family and I stopped in the Lone Star 8820 U.S. 31 South Indianapolis IN. at 8:22 pm on 9/23/06. We have dined here several times in the past with no problem with quality of food or service. However, this night was an awful experience. We had our dinner brought to us in a timely fashion. The waiter told my wife they were out of the soup she had ordered. ( No problem....it was late in the evening ) They substituted with vegetables that came much later. The vegetables had a small green "inch worm" in it. It blended in well with the broccoli, so I am sure it was no one in particulars fault. The real problem was the fact we had to pay for this meal, even though, it had ruined everyones appetite my children stopped eating all together. Our waiter (Dustin) picked up the worm smashed it and threw it on the floor. The manager gave us a discount on one kids meal (found out on receipt that KIDS EAT FREE Saturdays 11am til 4pm.. so not much of a loss for Lone Star.) We sat there in amazement, thinking that we would at least be offered an apology and a reasonable discount. The waiter just continued to ask if we were ready to pay. I guess I should have refused, but, I was in no mood to cause a big "scene". I wonder if I can call and have the charges stopped on my credit card....?

I think you're being a bit unreasonable. You can't expect a family's worth of free dinners because of one worm and no soup.

First of I think you were very polite and understanding about the worm, I am not sure I would have taken it as well as you did. However, you and your wife evidentally finished your meals and therefore you are obligated to pay for them. Had you all stood up and left at the moment the worm was discovered it would have made more sense for them to comp you the whole meal. But it isn't fair to eat, leave and then contest the bill later.

Call and ask to speak to the day manager that might bring results.

Your beef is still with the restaurant however, and contesting the bill before you have attempted to deal with them directly is not right. My experience has been that generally the credit card companies will not remove a charge until you have tried to work it out with the vendor.
cycolbur's suggestion of asking to speak to the day manager is a very good one, I might even show up in person to do so. Decide in advance what you want and ask for it (free meal for yourself, free meal for all etc.) and good luck to you.

The meal should have been taken off, not the child meal. We had a similar problem at Chowder Pot a few months back. The manager tried to comp us with a free desert. We told him we did not want a desert and to take the meal off the ticket and we were told they could not do that. We thought we were being very reasonable. When we realized we were not going to get anywhere we offered to take the worm to the health department. We ended up getting the one meal taken off the bill (that is all we wanted)

That is all I was looking for. We were not trying to get an entire family dinner for free. Everyone lost their appetite and did not finish their meals. A free kids meal (which they had given everyone from 11 AM to 4 PM) at $3.99 is a far difference from $17.99. The money is not an issue at this point, just the way they handled the situation.

I 100% agree! They handled it horribly. Thats disgusting. Not only should they have comped ALL your meals, but they should have kissed your feet hoping you didn't report them. There's no way of knowing where the worm came from and their are clearly not paying attention to the meals they serve...so maybe they shouldn't be serving them until they do.

Blech! They should have comped all your meals, and for the waiter to smash it there in front of you....well, I've certainly lost my appetite just thinking about it.

I have to admit, the way they handled it was ridiculous. However, I entirely doubt anyone was at fault here. Remember: IT WAS AN INCH WORM. Called so because they are so small. In a pile of those mixed veggies that weighs over 200 pounds, it is easy to not see it.

They definitely should have comped the meal, but you should have asked for the comp if they weren't offering it! I highly doubt it would have caused a scene.
