Choose Your Shipping Method Informative - Is Faster Shipping Really Faster?

Review by Slimjim on 2006-10-13
This came up on a review recently and I’m curious how many would back this observation. Whenever I order something online, or even over the phone, there usually is 2 to 4 shipping methods available. Basic ground is cheapest and listed as 7-10 days. There usually follows a couple priority options increasing in price and then an overnight which is extremely expensive. I always use the basic ground because I regularly receive the package within 4 days or less. I last ordered office supplies and it showed up less than 24 hours later.
I know of several instances where businesses hope customers take a priority shipping choice because they have added profit to the shipping, but have also seen others just offer the options at actual cost for customer convenience.
My opinion is that the basic shipping seems as fast as any and the most reasonable. I’m curious if anybody has otherwise seen real differences when upgrading. I wouldn't count overnight because it is so specific.

Likely you're right, but here's one story better. When moving once to a new town, I packed up and shipped my pc related essentials, it took maybe 5 boxes. I payed for 1st class postage on the more delicate items, pc and monitor, hoping they'd be treated better in handling not caring that it was promised in 5 days or less. The remainder of the items, books, software and such, I mailed 3rd class - 7 to 10 day delivery. To my surprise, when I met my packages on the other end of 800 mile journey, ALL of the packages were neatly assembled in a row for my pickup in the office in the shorter time window. Clearly, they'd all been put on the same domestic flight/carrier together, to keep them together, I presume. Now here's the question, did I waste money or save money - meaning did some of my stuff get a free "first class" upgrade because I'd spent more money on a couple of items? Would they have all arrived in a shorter time, regardless of what I spent on postage?

Weird how that happens, huh? I worked in shipping and receiving before and thought that people were crazy paying for "overnight" shipments in the same state. Harry, are you listening?

I look at what State the package will be coming from...if it's across the country, I may use the faster shipping, but it's stupid to use quicker shipping if it's in the same State that you live in...When I buy from Ebay, I've had things shipped through regular mail and got it within the same week if it was sent from my state or even a surrounding state...Sometimes even the cheaper delivery "book rate" comes within a few days if they are in my area, but a book rate from across the States can take a month to get.

It depends on where the company is sending their items from. Next day air is crazy for people shipping to an address in the same state. I'd rather wait anyway than pay a bunch for quick shipping! :)

Slim: I order my "meds" from a company in Texas (I'm in NY). They offer basic ground (as you said 7-10 days) for free. They also offer what they call "priority" for $19.95. I have always used the freebie, and have always received the Rx in 2-3 days.

I alway's let some one else worry about the shipping because that's what I pay them for. Hey glc do you get a good price on your meds? What is the company name?

Lid: It's CAREMARK...in Fort Worth, TX..800-966-5772, and yes, they have great prices.

glc Thanks for the information I will definitely give it a try. They got me on to many drugs and I never even took aspirin before the hart attack. Now the insurance company is telling me what I can have and when, are they doctors now?
