Free411 Compliment - Making D.A. Free Again

Review by kirkthepelican on 2006-11-07
Hey all, just putting the word out there about something free, because everyone likes free.

Directory Assistance *used* to be free, and I don't know why it stopped being free, but it's free again (kind of) with 1800free411. Their business model is built on advertisements, which explains how they make money. But the advertisements, from what I've heard so far, are not at all annoying or irrelevant or long.

To put it to the test in the real world, I called from my cell and asked for the number of the nearest Pizza Hut location. What's kind of funny is I had to listen to a 15 second ad for Domino's, which of course is Pizza Hut's main rival -- but it shows that they're trying to get you relevant ads to listen to (as opposed to an ad for Pep Boys or something). At the end of the ad I was asked if I wanted to be connected to the advertiser, Domino's -- you can see how potential advertisers might be ecstatic about this part. Answering no, I then got the number for Pizza Hut.

I've yet to have a need to try another 1800free411 call, now that I'm stuffing my face with pizza as I write this, but as soon as I need it again I know I won't be paying for it.

I tried it and decided after the second time that it wasn't worth listening to the ads. I'm much happier picking up my phone book, or if I were looking for a Pizza Hut, I'd just go to pizzahut.com and look it up there.

Switchboard.com is free...and you don't have to listen to any ads (granted there are ads in the headers, but you don't have to read them)!

Hey I was gonna write my own review on this but then saw yours and thought I'd add my, ahem, 3 cents here instead.

Anyway, I tried this along with 411metro and google sms (btw, google is slowly taking over the world in case you didn't notice), and by far 1800free411 was the best of them in terms of what was fastest and painless. I think this is the one the's got the free DA market locked up since they're already in full swing and the others are probably in beta or something.
