WILKES BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA -- As a result of having two brain tumors, a "meningioma" and a "Schwannoma" or "Acoustic Neuroma," and having significant symptoms from them, my doctor declared me disabled as of November 21, 2006. I am no longer able to work because of my disability. I immediately filed for Social Security Disability and SSI. My experience with this agency has been most positive up to this point.
I started my claim by completing the online application at the Social Security Admin web site. I also contacted all of my doctors and the hospitals/clinics where I received treatment or tests to get my medical records. This took me about 3-4 days to complete. I then received a call from someone at the Social Security Administration to review my claim with me. She informed me that she was impressed with my claim and how prepared I was. The date for my initial SSI intake was scheduled for today, December 4, 2006.
I went to my intake today and it was a reasonably fast process. I was asked a series of questions that related to my current financial status, my medical records were copied, and I was given a print out of my intake to carry with me. I was informed it takes about 120 days to get a final determination from DDS at the Social Security office as to whether my claim would be approved or denied. The gentleman who completed the intake was professional, attentive, and most helpful.
This has been my experience initially with the Social Security Administration.
