Sporstman Steel Safe Company Informative - Sporstman Steel Safe Company's Fradulent practices
In April of 2006 I ordered and paid for a large heavy "Crown Series" safe from Sporstman Steel Safe Company. They custom build and sell direct to the consumer so the consumer does not see the safe until it arrives and has to trust the company to deliver what was ordered and paid for. Sportsman thoroughly broke this trust, delivering roughly half the safe that was paid for. The safe arrived in June. It had numerous relatively minor defects but one huge problem. I only noticed that problem because I happen to have scales avaliable. I weighed the safe before moving it to its intended location. When I went back to the materials I had printed out from Sportsman's web site when I placed my order, I found that the safe I received was 650lbs. light. I paid over $4,800 for the safe and it was to have quarter inch sides, and a 3/8" door with 1/2" plate, weighing 1,650lbs. The safe Sportsman delivered weighed 1,142 lbs with with heavy door and a safe-in-a-safe, indicating a basic safe weight of 1,000lbs. Sportsman sells a safe the size of the one I ordered and paid for made with lighter steel (ten guage) that weighs 1,000 lbs. Obviously, that is what I they shipped me. The base price for the lighter safe is $2,100 less than I paid, and there is no way to dress it up to cost $4,800.(Sportsman claims to have sent me an invoice but despite repeated requests for one I still do not have one.)Sportsman could be cheating its customers routinely and few would know. My scales are certified annually and when they were checked after this they were correct. I have had a local safe expert look at the safe and he said it is ten guage. You can sort of tell just by thumping on it. Beginning in late June I have called, emailed, and written the company repeatedly. Other than initially claiming that my scales are wrong and that that my safe was not supposed to be 1/4" (inconsistent arguments that are rendered nonsensical by reviewing their product advertising and prices), and to make the occasional excuse for not responding, they simply do not respond. I have talked to my salesman, Richard, and to the president of the company, Kevin. Kevin has my file and is doing nothing. It is now December. I have been thoroughly cheated by Sportsman.
