On-line travel agency Informative - Do not be overcharged

Review by BobJohn on 2006-12-09
I was looking up hotel rates in the tourist area on the Yucatan Pennisula, Mexico. I found an Omni resort and checked the rates - I got a good rate. I then went to Orbitz and Cheap tickets, the cheapest rate I got was $14 MORE plus fees. What gives? Just be an informed consumer and check directly with the hotel before you make a reservation.

This may be a rhetorical question, but doesn't everybody check both places before making any type reservations? I know I do. In some cases, I even try a third source--my local travel agency. I want to get the most bang for my buck. However, thanks for the heads up to those who don't take the time to thoroughly investigate the way you and I do.

I usually only use Orbitz, etc for hotels IF the hotel itself says it is out of rooms. Sometimes those 3rd party services reserve rooms in advance and may have some available. Other than that, you cannot beat going to the hotel website itself for the best prices. Eliminate the middleman, save money.

A lot of hotel chains now have special online prices that are better than the online travel agencies. I usually go to Expedia (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) and look to see which hotels are available. Then I go to the hotel that I wish to book and make the reservations directly through them.

cking the other sites are great for comparing. i found i could usually get a better rate at the hotel itself. if you need to cancel for any reason, there is no problem and no penatly, unlike the orbitz.
