M & I Banks Informative - Gift card - Gift cards

Review by Manager on 2006-12-11
STEVENS POINT, WISCONSIN -- I was given a gift card a year ago as a present. I went to use the card and was informed that the card had expired and there is no value on it.

Somebody gave them money to purchase the gift card, and they converted the cash to a card that has restrictions and expiration dates attached to it.

This is true of pretty much any gift card these days. They aren't really a good deal. There isn't good justification for reducing the value... they do it because they can.
Anyone looking for a gift of this nature would be far better off to purchase an American Express Gift Check, which can be spent most anywhere. At my credit union, they are free. This won't be true everywhere, but they are generally low cost.

Ken, I'm at the point I intend on giving cash. Those gift cards have gotten ridiculous at some of the restrictions and the giver doesn't realize it at time of purchase.

Years ago a family member put cash in the stocking and the receipient was as happy as could be. Spend it whenever or wherever and that was the end of it. Lots of folks enjoyed spending the money on after Christmas sales at any store.

Manager, thanks for giving us the heads up. You've convinced many against gift cards, myself included.
