Fornello Restaurant Complaint - Nightmare - Itallian Food

Review by abs on 2006-12-16
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- I have been a regular at this restaurant for over 5 years. My husband and I had our first date there and I have sung their praises to other foodies. This is why I feel betrayed, violated, and abused. After a extensive meal last night, there was some confusion over a gift certificate. When we asked to speak to a manager, I was escorted to a backroom where I was verbally attacked. The "gentleman" accused me of being a "cheap scammer" along with a string of other profanity laced insults. I have been in this industry for over 15 years, and I am sensitive to those individuals that try to take advantage of particular offers. The manager did not inquire to the specifics of the situation, but rather chose to falsely accuse me and my husband. I was so upset last night that I became ill. I have never been treated so poorly. My only solace is to warn others of this vitriolic man. I hope the neighborhood will avoid this one time favorite until it is run under new management. What a waste of excellent mussels.

Sounds like it is run by the mob! I won’t go there and if I were you I would report it to the police. Sorry about your evening

Was this a gift certificate that you purchased (or were given) from the restaurant? Were they trying not to honor it? I feel like some details are missing from this complaint.

It's sad that you became so upset that it made you ill. Try this next time "Is this going to matter in 5 years?" If yes, by all means, get upset. If not, realize there are bigger things in life that can cause you to get ill.

It's sad there are indeed legitimate scammers out there trying to hurt restaurants, so that claims like yours are disregarded. Give us the details of the gift certificate.

You said: "there was some confusion over a gift certificate". ....Sooo, what was the confusion? a little enlightening would help. It didn't exactly give the manager the go ahead to turn into a shortfuse but what tripped is light fantastic?

First thing is first...this is my first time using "my 3 cents" and I initially used it for the standard selfish / cathartic abuse. However, I feel (unexpectedly validated) surprised by the response. Yes...this certificate was purchased along with the meal (our meal: 96$ + one gift certificate 100$ - 25$ purchase credit). We (my husband and I) asked the server when we sat (before wine) if we could apply the 25$ credit to the current dinner...if we purchased the 100$ gift certificate as a gift. Our server conferred with another colleague and affirmed the proposal. After a wonderful meal (as always) we purchased 100$ g.c. and our bill was 196.00$. I asked if we could apply the 25$ credit, as we had discussed, and that is how I was lead into the before mentioned 'nightmare.'
I hope this (lame account) detail helps to clarify this awful experience. It is always a shame when a wonderful craft is shadowed by ego.

If everything happened as you stated, then, yes, this was horrible customer service treatment. And, I thank you for the warning.

I certainly wouldn't go there again.

What kind of a "man" is your husband to let those creeps at that restaurant talk to you like that? If anyone ever talked to my wife like that, I would knock their f-ing teeth out!

Did you still by the gift certificate? I would have told them I will pay for my meal, but we no longer want the gift certificate.
