Home Depot Informative - Restock fees and extortion
NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Buyer beware of restock fees.
Last year I was looking at sheds in Home depot. They offer special deals if you open up one of their credit card accounts. So, we did and ordered a shed from sheds USA through Home Depot. Needless to say we ordered it on a Sunday and after talking to Sheds USA they said it would be a two to three week turnaround. The next day the called and said they would like to come that Wednesday. Being I just started a new job and a permit was required I told I had to cancel and wait till fall. They said no problem. Almost a month later I get a Home Depot Credit card bill in with a $680.00 restock fee. I tried fighting it with the credit card company but to no resolve. However the manager of the Home depot was very helpful in trying to help me resolve this issue with Sheds USA. No sooner I canceled they called Home Depot to put the charge through. I was livid. I must have went back and forth a dozen times with them and kept throwing the fine print in my face for something I never received. Their last offer was to return the deposit if I ordered another shed. Sounded like extortion to me so I fild with small claims court.
It was then they decided to return my money.
My advice to anyone who decides to make a purchase specially when it is a large purchase is to use a credit card not associated with them such as AAA. They will get your money back in a heart beat. And, any business who operates like this would never get my business again. I also know for a fact that Home Depot employees get big Christmas bonuses based on restock fees and simple entrapment tactics. Be very careful on how you handle anything in their stores. If they can you look like a thief, they will no matter how much you spend there. I also know someone who was in a the middle of making large purchases and forgot he had placed a 25 cent bolt in his pocket because he already had more then he can handle. It was an honest mistake. They called him into the office and fined him $100.00 dollars other wise they were going to call the police and have him arrested. Naturally to protect his good name he paid it. This is how low they will stoop. Granted there are many people out there who will steal the teeth out of your head if you are not looking but, Home Depot preys on the unaware and innocents of their consumers.
