eBay Informative - Warning! New Ebay Scam!

Review by chemman on 2006-12-18
I just thought I'd warn everyone out there about a new scam I've encountered on eBay. I recently had to sell some tickets to an event on eBay due to a last minute change of plans. I haven't sold anything on there in quite some time and this is the first time I've seen this. I got a question sent to me from an eBay account that has only a couple of positive feedbacks. The question comes from the eBay service legitimately (you can ask the seller a question from a link in the auction). The person stated they were interested in buying my tickets but wanted to know why I had two identical auction listings on eBay, and said here is a link to the other one in question; and provided a link that was a fraudulent link. It took you to a phishing site that looks just like eBay and asks you to log in to, thereby capturing your ID and password. Luckily, I recognized the scam and didn't fall for it, but I wanted to warn everyone because it was a very tricky way and some less savvy users may have fallen for it, since the question is legitimately coming from the eBay system and the link in it appears to be an eBay link. I reported it to eBay immediately but they have yet to do anything about it or close down this guys account (I won't post his info since I'm not sure if his account was hijacked for this purpose or not) Just remember, never trust a link sent to you by email or in this case posted into my account questions section on the eBay site.

It seems that eBay has turned into magnet for thieves and con men! Can't more be done by eBay to reign in the multitude of scammers and con artists who prey on eBay members?

These are the kinds of posts that actually are helpful here. Thanks chem.

I'm glad to hear that you reported it it Ebay...I've had alot of phishing attempts on my Ebay,PayPal and bank account. I report them all...it only takes a click of the mouse to report it and hopefully stop these criminals. Great Informative, they seem to always come up with a new way, I have not heard this one before...so, thanks again.

I've gotten several scam emails from bidders asking why I haven't sent the items when they paid the money. They say they will report me. Funny because I don't sell on Ebay. I just recognized them as clever scams, and reported them to Ebay for what good it will do.

JayD-To be even safer, never use IE! Also, I wanted to point out that the link was not just in the email, it was in the questions section of my eBay account, which is why I think it is even trickier than an emailed link. You can go to eBay directly, log into your account and see you have a question waiting from a buyer. It's essentially the same thing but some people may be fooled since they feel they have legitimately signed into eBay and have a message from their service. Just a heads up.

If I get a link telling me to go such and such a place, such as paypal or eBay, I type in the address. I never trust a link from someone I don't know. Also, its a good idea to change your passwords if you even THINK you've clicked on a bogus link. Be safe, change passwords often. Peace!

I had my ID stolen on E-Bay by a bogus e-mail that asked me to log in on what looked to be a legitimate question. I have never been able to establish another E-Bay account or been able to get the scammer removed and whoever he or she is has apparently been scamming people in my name and apparently there is nothing that can be done because you can't contact E-Bay unless you have an account and the scammer changed the password. Any ideas out there?

eBay is as big a scam as a lot of the sellers are on theri they say they will endeavour to help you with clain=ming your money back after you pay them you get an email saying to bad sorry we will not continue with your claim nor do they remove the sellers account. eBay is more interested in the commisions than the people who mde them

I, too, have had a phishing from PayPal/ EBay --- which showed up as an inquiry relating to the fact someone ELSE with my name was charging things on EBay/PayPal --- and would I please fill out the form showing my correct(ed) name and password to prove that I was Me! Sent it in to EBay Fraud --- who responded that it was fraud.
What alerted me was the fact that EBay/PayPal have screwed so many people that I refuse to do business with them. I have tried (repeatedly) to stop their emails and adverts, to no avail. When the originator of PayPal sold out to EBay, he must have taken all of the integrity with him as the "Pal" in PayPal is now ALWAYS in favor of EBay and PayPal.

Common sense. You never respond to someone in email, or phone, or even snail mail if they contact you first. Never click on a link in email, instead, open your browser and enter the address you know that is correct. By phone, call them back, at a number you know is correct. Also, people do not usually contact you to provide personal or financial information. They already have this info. If in doubt, contact the party you are concerned about (call back, or type in correct address in browser)
